An exhibition celebrating the history of Westerfield rail station will open this weekend.

Curated by The Friends of Westerfield Station, the display will feature rarely seen photos, artefacts and stories from Westerfield station’s long, fascinating and sometimes surprising history.

The exhibition is being hosted in the garden room of The Railway Inn which is next to the station.

The public are invited to visit the exhibition which will be open on Saturday 6th September and Sunday 7th September from 10am – 4.30pm. Entry is free.

Westerfield station is supported by The Friends of Westerfield Station who have ‘adopted’ the station as part of Greater Anglia’s Station Adoption initiative. The group transformed the platforms into wildlife friendly gardens with plants, flowers and shrubs to ensure local wildlife thrives throughout the year.

Organiser and station adopter volunteer, Sandy Burn, said:

“I’d like to thank the Ipswich Transport Museum for their help and for allowing me into their wonderful archives so that this idea could come to life.

“It’s great to be able to bring the fascinating history of Westerfield to people as the rail industry celebrates 200 years of the modern railway and I hope people will find it interesting and enjoyable.”

Alan Neville, Greater Anglia’s Customer and Community Engagement Manager, said:

“Huge thanks to Sandy and the team for everything they do at the station and for promoting Westerfield with this fantastic exhibition which provides a great opportunity for a day out by train.”
