We hold FREE station-to-station Guided Walks throughout the year. Your dog is welcome too and they travel free on the train. There’s no need to book. Just show up.

Sutton Hoo Circular from Melton Station

5 miles with an option to continue an additional 1.5 miles to Woodbridge

The circular route includes tidal marshes, oak woodland, and sandy heaths leading to the National Trust’s Sutton Hoo estate. This walk takes in a short section of the King Charles III England Coast Path that just opened in late September completely avoids the hilly section on narrow pavement along the busy B1083.
At the end there’s an option to continue with us an additional 1.5 miles along the River Deben to Woodbridge with its many cafes and restaurants.
Trains: 9.06 from Lowestoft – 10:16 from Ipswich – 9:28 from Felixstowe
Trains home from Melton: hourly at :11 to Ipswich and :35 to Lowestoft. From Woodbridge: hourly at :17 to Ipswich and :31 to Lowestoft.
Note: if coming from the Lowestoft direction but doing the full 6.5 miles, please buy a ticket to Woodbridge but alight at Melton at 10.35.
Snack/Drink: Please bring a snack and drink for a short stop en route; there aren’t any places for food along the way. There are places at the end of the walk for lunch, or bring a lunch with you.
Toilets: there aren’t any toilets on the route but plenty of tree cover.
Advice if you plan to take part in our Guided Walks
- Wear stout, comfortable footwear and have waterproofs if wet.
- Bring refreshments (especially drink), a snack, or lunch for brief stops along the way.
- Dogs are welcome but must be on a lead.
- Check train times before setting on the National Rail Enquiries website or mobile app, or call 03457 48 49 50.
- Be tick aware! Ticks can be encountered all year. Government advice on ticks is available here.
- No insurance cover is provided – all come at own risk.
