During four consecutive days in mid-November, engineers will be replacing track at Lowestoft station to help maintain reliability for passengers in Suffolk and Norfolk.

Worn out track along platforms 2 and 3 is fifty years old, having been installed in the 1970s; the ground beneath the rails is saturated in several locations, increasing the likelihood of faults that can cause delays or cancellations. Oil from previous generations of rolling stock is visible which has contributed to the deterioration of the track bed.

From Friday 13 November to Monday 16 November engineers will be use a specialist vacuum machine to remove areas of old ballast – the stones that support the track; it will be replaced with with fresh material. Sleepers and rails will also be renewed at various locations along the platforms. This work will help to keep trains moving safely, smoothly and reliably into the future.

Rail services on the East Suffolk Line and southern branch of the Wherry Lines will be affected.

Joe Kennedy, Infrastructure Director working as part of GBR Anglia, said: “The vital work we’re doing in November will help us provide the best possible service on these busy and important routes for years to come. We’re really sorry for the disruption, especially on the two weekdays, but this is a big job that we must get done to maintain a reliable railway.”
